Research Report Kevin Clerkley Discrimination Thesis Statement: Throughout the United States, there are millions of Americans who are struggling against direct and indirect discrimination. Discrimination is the making of a difference in treatment or favor on a basis other than individual merit (Merriam Webster Dictionary). Our world has always been faced with the problem of discrimination. It is one of the most discussed topics nowadays and throughout history. In all countries there is most likely at least one type of discrimination that affects different groups of people, but it is still among us especially here in the United States. Throughout the United States, there are millions of people who are strugglingâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Black rates of unemployment have been consistently double the rates of white unemployment since 1972 when the government first started tracking such data. Professor Bell argued that such statistics were not the result of inherent inferiority of African Americans but the persistence of ââ¬Å"structural racismâ⬠ââ¬â that the legacy of slavery and racial discrimination on which our nation was built has, intentionally or unin tentionally, left indelible marks so that the rhetorical ââ¬Å"level playing fieldâ⬠has never truly existed. Professor Bellââ¬â¢s beliefs are just one example of how he and other alike view racial discrimination in America (Kohn 1). The direct discrimination against women and race are just two examples. Religion has also been an area that people have experienced discrimination because of their religious beliefs. Sex and race discrimination can still be traced in our country today. While sex discrimination is against the law in many countries, all over the country, most women receive lower paying jobs than men. Although slavery and legal segregation have been outlawed, equality has not been achieved (Phillips 18, 31). Indirect discrimination is just the opposite of direct, and is often less obvious.
